Hand of Fatima

We’ve been seeing this symbol everywhere right now, there is a Fatima hand frenzy in the fashion world!

The hand of Fatima, also known as Hamsa, origins are unknown but it predates Christianity. A universal sign of protection, it is a talisman symbol and those who wear it believe it will protect them from harm against evil forces and bring them goodness, abundance, fertility, luck and good health.

It has evolved to become regarded as a sacred and respected symbol in Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Jain beliefs and now in the new religion of Fashion!

We’re seeing beaded bangles, long pendant necklaces and the symbol on boho bags all about town. where did the trend come from? Who knows…. in these unsafe times are we superstitiously looking for protection or are we just following a trend some celebrity started by accident? The later is more likely we think, but it looks so good we don’t care!

dressed up or down. If you are of a more casual persuasion, we have two new rucksacks available, perfect for festivals and summer adventures.

Scarves with their sumptious feel and vibrant colours can definitely provide the “wow factor”.

The history of the scarf dates back at least as far as ancient Rome. The ancient Romans developed the scarf into a diverse men’s fashion accessory, whether knotted to a belt or worn around the neck. Of course, this style was quickly adopted by women also, and the scarf has since become synonymous with women’s fashion.

Recently the scarf has experienced something of a revival, once again becoming a must-have item by women around the world. Head scarves and wraps grow ever popular with celebrities and convey elegance and sophistication.

Scarves have the advantage of flexibility in how they’re worn – around the neck, tied at the wrist, around the strap of a handbag or simply tucked into a belt for that hint of relaxed boho style.

The future of scarves looks bright and these fashion items now represent a huge opportunity for an exciting use of colours and patterns.

100 Years of Support!

This month we celebrate the 100th birthday of the Bra! To commemorate this momentous occasion we’d like to show you the highlights during the life of this most important garment.

It all started in 1913 when Mary Phelps Jacob, a New York City socialite, was granted a patent for inventing the modern bra. She used two handkerchiefs and a pink ribbon to create the “Backless Brassiere”. Amazingly, cup sizes did not exist until the 1920s and its hard to imagine a one size fits all bra but it appears that was the case for about 10 years! The first padded bra came in 1947, created by businessman Frederick Mellinger with the first push-up bra a year later, and wallop the cleavage was born!

In 1968 feminists protest the Miss America pageant, calling bras “instruments of female torture”. Though the protesters intended to burn their bras, they were not able to because of the police. Instead, they ended up throwing them into a garbage can, but the term “bra burners” stuck.

1990 saw Madonna get her cones out in a bra designed by Jean Paul Gaultier for her Blond Ambition tour and subsequently started the trend of underwear as outerwear that is still going strong today.

In the year 2000 fashion goes too far as Giselle Bunchen goes down the Victoria Secret runway in the most expensive item of underwear ever created, the $15 million ‘Red hot fantasy bra’ made from Thai rubies & diamonds.

So here we are 100 years later, blessed to be able to choose vintage treasures from any era we like or take comfort in the latest designs, may you live another 100 years yet!

Pinch of Sparkle – Vintage BOOM

From second hand tat, to stylish couture- vintage fashion is everywhere. And with the rise in online sales it’s no wonder that online vintage boutiques are doing well. But why NOW has vintage moved online? And will it stay there?

As I browsed the many online vintage sites I came across The Stellar boutique, (thestellarboutique.com) with its easy, accessible layout and models showcasing the products I had finally found the vintage experience I had once been dreading. I scrolled through pictures, decades, starting with the 70s my favourite era! And after half an hour of browsing I noticed my basket had three items in it. Item number one a pair of 70s sunglasses, item number two an Aztec beach bag from the 60s and item number three a 50s compact mirror that gave me a flashback to my childhood. My nana had a mirror exactly like it, which she would use to put her red lipstick on.

I loved this new vintage experience so much I rang my friend Lucy to thank her, the only thing she had to say was “I told you so” and as much as I hated it she was right. Finally, a way for people like me to avoid the musty smell, the vicious blondes and the rails and rails of stale clothing.

Grlfashionista’s Blog

Adorable and Fun. Two words that describe the vintage that is The Stellar Boutique. “The Stellar Boutique was created out of a love for all things original and authentic.” It provides its customers with not only unique vintage clothing and accessories, but also with both vintage and new home goods. And while I find the home goods charming, I definitely tend to stray towards the vintage clothing and accessories which she has so expertly separated into decades for me! Her strength: Vintage bags. If you are in the market for a great vintage bag, then you should definitely check Stellar out. Especially if you love leather, fringe and studs! Which I definitely do! Another thing I love about Stellar: The Rings. Huge, beautiful chunks of stone in silver just begging to be bought! It’s seriously hard to resist! Check out more about Stellar here.
